So I did my first post Timberman run this morning. My body was basically screaming at me for the entire 3 miles. I think the first run is very telling after a hard race. It tells you what REALLY hurts. You know how you finish a race and let's say your foot or ankle hurts and you fear that you injured it? Chances are that that is a mute injury and that the REAL soreness will show up within a day or two.
That happened.
This time around it was my calve muscles that really took the brunt. On Tuesday when I got back to work, while walking around the office, folks kept noticing, "You aren't walking too well!" Yep! I could hardly walk.
Tuesday night I was up all night going through the "evacuation" stage of recovery. By the time I woke up Wednesday AM I felt 100% better.
Do any of you swim in a 50 meter pool? I just swam for the first time in one Thursday morning. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! How have I gone this long without swimming in one? It was amazing how after you get past your usual 25 yards that your form starts to break down because you are used to a short 1 second break at that point. I really started to notice where my form started to stink by the time I hit the wall and was out of breath. What a workout! I did 1800 meters and was cooked! Perhaps it is time to make the $92/month investment and make this 50 meter pool my new swimming home, especially for 20IIRonman. I think this pool is less than 2 years old? SO NICE!
BIG TIME shoutouts to Colleen @ IRONDIVA as she tackles her THIRD Ironman, Louisville. Go Colleen! Knock this one out of the part! Last shoutout goes to Kevin @ IronmanByThirty as he tackles his 3rd Half Ironman of the season, the Breakwater Triathlon. Go knock that run out of the park, Kevin! I know you want to PR that sucker!
Have a good weekend everyone! Get some quality distance in! Or rest, like what I am planning on doing. Suppose to run 15 miles this weekend per my marathon schedule. My response?
"HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH"
and in case you are worried. I am NOT running 15 miles. That is crazy talk!
Was that you or your calves laughing (or screaming)?
ReplyDeleteDude, I HATE 50 meter pools. So funny you love it, sounds like the investment would not be such a bad idea...ENJOY the weekend off. 15 miles? F that. you just rocked the crap out of timberman, that's worth like 12 long runs on any marathon training plan!
ReplyDeleteI almost always swim in a 50 meter pool, I love it! Of course it means waking at the crack of dawn, but I'll take it.
ReplyDeleteuh, good luck with that run.
Ummm, I just hate pools in general [if I have to swim properly, that is].
ReplyDeleteI've never have used a 50M pool but would love to try. The closest one to me is about 30 miles away - gonna have to suck it up and go one day!
ReplyDeleteDid the swim help your legs recover? Yesterday evening I did a hard tempo run and my legs were trashed. I had already swam 3100yds in the morning but decided to hit the pool again after the run just for the recovery purpose and it worked very well! That cool indoor pool water is my key to recovery.
I dont know if $92 is worth it for a 50m pool, what else do you get for that price? I admit, swimming in a 50 is a whole different feeling, I only know one down here and I pass 10 pools to get to it, I am lazy, the closer the better.
ReplyDeleteLOL, the pool I swim in is 10 meters. It's in my backyard, though, so I can't complain about the price or the convenience.
ReplyDeleteDitch the run and recover, you completely deserve the time off!
A 50-meter pool would be awesome! Man, I wish I had one.
ReplyDeleteTrained in college in a 50m pool. In all honesty, it forced me to be a good swimmer. If you got the $92/month, bite the bullet.
ReplyDeleteI HATE the 25m pool we swim in. I feel like a hamster in a cage running back and forth. You could always follow Mandy's route and do dock intervals though :)
You better not run 15 miles! Seriously:) Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteYes, recovery stinks. Cliche--but listen to your body.
ReplyDeleteI love swimming in long course pools. They are so few and far between, however. When I was in Australia I swam in a 50-meter, saltwater pool. It was heaven!
jon, take the weekend off. have a beer. sleep. maybe go for a walk. lol.
ReplyDeletedont push it.
ur 15 miles can be made the week after. no worries.
I loved your response about doing a 15miler! Ha ha! I had the same response to my 12M run for my marathon plan after my HIM...hahahahaha...yeah right!
ReplyDeleteOh...I would love to swim in a 50m pool! Mine is 25m and while it works, I wish it were longer!
Yeah I have a lake and have problems in the pool cause I am not used to turning around so much. 50 meters would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I am happy to hear you are giving that running schedule the finger. You are going to do find in your marathon, you can deal with suckage! :)
Rest well! I often get that problem of not walking properly at work. Sometimes I can't wear my work shoes for a few days after an ultra.
ReplyDeleteGood call on the run...the 50m pool sounds incredible
ReplyDeleteSounds like it's time for some COMPRESSION SLEEVES! I'm telling you... I'm obsessed. I had been holding off on buying them for a long time, but my doctor actually *prescribed* them for me this week!! The kind she had me get are different then the regular zensah or CEP socks, but still. I'm in love!!
ReplyDeleteOur University pool is set on "long course" (50m) during the spring semester. I like it a lot better than the 25m length!
That's funny, that's ALWAYS my response to running. Too bad I dont think it will work with my new coach.
