T-Minus 8 days. We Got This! TAPER TIME!

My A++++++ race of the season, and the motivation for this season in in 8 days: Ironman Timberman 70.3. I have never felt so ready for a race in my life. The swimming is there, the biking has been there (and still is), and the running is there (as long as I bike beforehand).

This means that it is OFFICIALLY time to taper. Starting today I will be drawing down the volume.

Saturday (today): 40 mile bike, 3 mile run, BRICK
Sunday: 6 mile run
Monday: 3 mile run in AM, 2000 yard swim in PM
Tuesday: 26.5 mile bike
Wednesday: 4 mile run in AM, 1500 yard swim in PM
Thursday: 17 mile bike
Friday: 3 mile run
Saturday: OFF
Sunday: RACE! 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run

I have done this 3 times already this season. I know my pre-race nutrition (3 bowls of Cinnamon Toast's like rocket fuel!); I know my nutrition and pacing on the bike; now I just have to hope for some cooler and dryer weather to let me hit the afterburners off of the bike into the run.

But most of all, mentally I am there. This time last year I was a total train wreck filled with doubt. Fast forward a year and my confidence is so high right now. I know what to expect and I know the course. I know where the hills are to take it easy on the bike and where to hit the gas on the flats and I have literally done the run in my head about 3 different times. I get so juiced up when I visualize that run!

Everything that I have done since January 1st has contributed to what will go down next weekend.

  1. I love feeling that confident going into a race! Yay for you and happy tapering!
I have to laugh about your pre-race nutrition - I thought I was the only one who eats sugar cereal (I eat Lucky Charms) as rocket fuel!

  2. Happy tapering! You are going to do awesome! I can't believe it's only 8 days away! Where is the time going??

  3. Good post Jon. You are in a good place right now and your results are going to reflect that. Isn't is cool when you plan something, follow that plan, and then know that the expected results are imminent? That is the definition of a winner right there!
Oh, I thought of you during the run portion of my brick this morning. I locked the bike to my car rack and started to run, about 1/2 mi in I looked down at my Garmin and was running a 7:30 pace and my HR was in Zone 2. I thought, "Damn, Jon ain't the only one who runs better of the bike!" ... I slowed down for the rest of the run but I could have ran for a long time at that pace!

  4. Love the Pre Race Nutrition!!! I have been the nervous wreck this year about my first 70.3!! You are going to do great Im sure!!! :)

  5. Your race day fuel is officially ridiculous. Happy Taper! I can't wait to hear about how much you CRUSH IT in New Hampshire!!

  6. Wow, you are definitly in the right place for this race. I wish you a great week. I know you will have a great race but here's to you anyway! Good luck and go smash it!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. You are going to rock Timberman! Your training numbers have been through the roof this year and Timberman isn't going to know what hit it.

    Good luck with the taper!

  8. Nice! great set yout got goin on...and the taper schedule looks perfect.

  9. Hi little bro,
