Are there any Dr's in the house? My back spasmed while running. WTF?

So 2 mins into my run this morning, my back suddenly out of the blue spasms, and I come to a dead stop having a hard time breathing. It was like getting wacked in the face! The spasm felt like the two big tenderloin muscles lining each side of the spine just seized up for a split second. That was all. Now as I sit here I can breath fine (just no deep breaths) but sitting is really uncomfortable. My back is in a lot of pain!

Has this ever happened to you? Ever heard of this? Know what to do?

The walk back to my place was humbling....

  1. welcome to my world. It is kind of funny what I found caused mine. Tight hamstrings and glutes. Stretch a lot and see how it is. I usually have to take anti-inflamatorys after this happens too for a week.

I do a lot of yoga and stretching to prevent this from happening when I run.

Hopefully its something minor like tight muscles in your legs.

  2. Interesting comment from Matty O. Seems tight muscles may be the cause of everything! Maybe it is time to go back to the PT.

  3. I had this happen a few months ago, no idea why and it hasn't returned (cross fingers). I was running with a pack, which I normally don't do, so mybe my back had tightened up because of that.

  4. That sucks! I am with everyone else about the stretching. I think that may help!

  5. I had this happen a few weeks back, but it wasn't my back. Someone actually whacked me in the face!

Stretch, and be wary of the anti inflammatory meds. they are good all the way up until they are bad.
    +1 for Yoga.

  7. That sucks. That happened to me once - and I couldn't sit or do anything comfortably. After a few days I ended up going to a chiropractor, and it really helped. I am not big on chiros in general, but I could have kissed that guy that day for fixing me. He said that I needed to really work on stretching (yoga) to prevent it.

    Hope you get better soon.

  8. Ugh..I'm so sorry! That's so weird that it happened out of nowhere! I would stretch it out too, like others have suggested. I hope you feel better soon.

  10. oh yeah...the bane of my existence....What Matty says is true; tight hamstrings and glutes, keep 'em stretched (not that I do). Getting some blood flow to the area helps too; gentle massage. Aslo, try lying on the floor with you legs up on a chair or your coffee table (so that your calves are resting on the surface). It will take a lot of stress off your back.

If all else fails, a muscle relaxer and a glass of wine. I am not joking. I speak from years of experience.

  13. I'm a clinic intern in acupuncture school. From a chinese medical perspective, sounds like you've got qi stagnation. VERY easy to treat in our medicine. Results within one treatment usually. Anti-inflams are hard on your liver, and ice can often cause injuries to become dormant and leave the area susceptible to future injury. Let me know if you have any questions! I'm happy to help as much as I can over cyberworld.
